Oh, could there be a better start to the Snake Pit? of course not, Black Mamba's first topic is OIL!
Today it was announced that President Obama will *drill, baby, drill*. For those of us who remember how laaamee John McCain looked when he was trying to get the crowd fired up with such slogan, it seems kind of odd that offshore drilling is now a democratic issue. What it really feels like is Obama going republican on energy. But is he??? I mean, how bad is lifting the 20 year ban on offshore drilling?? Personally, I just wanted us OUT of oil and into other forms of fueling. Additonally, the area is huuuuge, stretching from Delaware to mid Florida. I don't know how I feel about floating platforms off the outer banks of North Carolina (maybe we should go there soon before the oil platforms arrive!). My first thought was "omg, liberals are going to flip out". According to the New York Times article, THEY DID! like the tree huggers that they are. But what I did not expect was the Republican reaction. They kindda flipped out! rejecting it because it didn't go far enough. Wow... I guess it's true, nowadays, a republican idea if it doesn't come out of a republican will be rejected by republicans. Sigh... sad.
Either way, Obama said this about his proposal:
"this announcement is part of a broader strategy that will move us from an economy that runs on fossil fuels and foreign oil to one that relies more on homegrown fuels and clean energy. And the only way this transition will succeed is if it strengthens our economy in the short term and long term. To fail to recognize this reality would be a mistake"
I guess it's about diversification? energy independence from the Middle East?? According to a nicely balanced article by the New York Times, the proposal is ALSO supposed to buy the votes of several moderate/conservatives to the climate bill - which allegedly is coming soon. Oh, Obama, you and your congressional strategies and alliances.
I dunno how I feel about this. I resist this because of my natural aversion to oil and the anger I have towards it because yes, I want to see them fail. I am bitter.
So for the purpose of this blog post, I will remain neutral and simply share the wealth (pun!): http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/01/science/earth/01energy.html?nl=us&emc=politicsemailema1
